It hasn’t been a good week for Craigslist.
The site has until 5 p.m. to take down its adult ads, or else, says South Carolina’s attorney general’s office.
On Wednesday Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster tried to strike a deal with South Carolina’s Attorney General Henry McMaster; Buckmaster offered to take down its “erotic services” within a week, but create an “adult” section. Erotic services are commonly believed to be a front for prostitution. Ironically, the more closely supervised ads would go up to $10, from $5 for mere erotic services. A nice trick, if you will forgive the pun. Read More »

As local media provide more direct ecommerce, scams will come with the territory. Craigslist as the leader of “wildwest” style community classifieds has more than adult ads to worry about.
Scammers are also targetting renters on Craigslist in Lousisiana, according to local station wwltv.com:
Here’s how it works: Scammers copy then re-post ads for houses, substituting their own contact information. Once a renter answers the ad on Craigslist, the scammers send them an email with instructions. They claim they need to rent the property quickly because they’re away doing missionary work. You send them the first month’s rent and a deposit and somebody in Nigeria pockets the money.
Probably scammers target Craiglist in part because its so successful
Slidell real estate agent Melody Martindale said that six days after she listed a house in the Kingspoint Subdivision, a bogus ad for the property appeared on Craigslist.
A person, allegedly from Nigeria, claimed to own the house and put it up for rent.
“It seems that they’re trying to get the renters, people who are looking for a place to rent, to mail them money through the mail and then they will mail you the keys so you can live in the home,” said Martindale. But, the keys never arrive.
